Indian tradition has very exotic forms of traditional handmade craft, and some handicrafts have the Geographical Indication of various art forms,

Chikankari is G.I. of the Lucknow region and that's the reason sometimes people also call it Lucknawi, or Lucknow Chikan.

The first process is selecting a design, then the design is made into Chikankari by the artisans setting the design in 32 different stitches.

Some stitches of chikankari are

1. Phanda
2. Murri
3. Dhaniya
4. Ghaspatti
5. Zanjeera
6. Bijli
7. Kaantein
8. Ikhari Bakhiya
9. Bakhiya or shadow stitch

Jaalis are of 6 types generally but some artisans claim to be more in numbers,
some jaali ( perforated pattern ) names are -


1. Siddhaul Jaali
2. Katora Jaali
3. Chasm - e - Bulbul Jaali
4. Makda Jaali
5. Taj Mahal Jaali

Block making happens in the size of the motif, first, it is drawn on the wood and then the block is carved out using the carving tools and done by hand.                      

Craft has its importance as every block that is used in Chikankari is made by hand, the charges depend upon the intricacy of the block an enthusiast needs for their own design.

The third process is the printing of wooden blocks on the fabric, which acts as a guide to Chikankari embroidery artisans.

The fourth and most important process is by Chikankari women artisans who embroider the fabric using thread and needle and choosing from 32 different stitches.



Washing of Chikankari 

The final process is washing the blueprints which guided embroidery artisans for the stitches.
